MS RPC/DCOM exploits of August 2003 Surely, you have heard about this on the news. Well, if not, many folks that I know of are getting their systems infected with the Slammer worm - you had better install MS03-26. For one of the best explanations of this (very technical) see Exploitation of Microsoft Windows DCOM RPC flaws. Among the effects of this are:
Computers rebooting every 90 seconds
Microsoft's Tech support call center having 4 hour wait times and 1000+ calls in the queue
Unexplained crashes
Unexplained Remote Procedure Call (RPC) or SVCHOST.EXE crashes
Linking between documents/files in OLE-enabled programs fails
By the way, if you have a firewall and virus protection, your risk level is very low - but still there. Install this patch!
